3 Challenges Which Can Stall or Derail Cloud Adoption

The road to cloud adoption has been well-traveled. IT leaders have rushed to embrace cloud tools for the agility and savings they can bring to their organizations. Despite all of that foot traffic, there are still plenty of bumps which companies will need to deal with. These bumps can keep longstanding cloud adopters from really seeing the full return on their cloud investments. Likewise, they can also derail recent adopters early on in the process by frustrating users and eventually IT teams.

More than four out of five (81%) organizations say that within two years they’ll be using cloud services such as IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS to support their enterprise management software. So what should companies who are looking to get started with the cloud – or who are planning to expand their reliance on it – be on the lookout for?

Three potential headaches

Here are some of the biggest obstacles companies tend to run into, according to research by Forrester Consulting:

  • Roughly 83% of companies surveyed admitted they were struggling to unite all of the individual cloud services they’re using. For many, these included service elements such as IaaS and PaaS but it also included public and private cloud options. It’s critical for companies to ensure all of these tools play nicely with each other, but there’s another element beyond that. The tools need to all be able to be reviewed across a hybrid setting and modified and analyzed to ensure they continue to meet the unique needs of a company’s individual users.
  • Another challenge which companies moving to the cloud are facing is juggling multiple solutions purchased from multiple vendors. One vendor doesn’t always provide all of the tech solutions a company needs. As a result, many companies have adopted a bit of a “grocery store” approach when it comes to their technologies, taking one thing from this vendor and one thing from that one and so on. Finding and adding new pieces which complement the cloud tools and apps they already utilize can require a substantial time commitment from IT.
  • The overall user experience is another issue potentially limiting cloud rollouts. One area in particular users seem to struggle with the most is cloud computing’s self-service component. Forrester’s researchers found 73% of organizations said they were stumbling over that feature. Many users want to take the lead on customizing their cloud environment and if they’re having trouble with self-service, and channeling that frustration to IT, it could limit the likelihood of a company exploring future cloud prospects.
